Banned antibiotics were still detected after Vietnam joined the WTO…Similarly, the EU, which in 2006 purchased about 22% of Vietnam's total fishery shipments, has also recently detected banned antibiotics in Vietnamese catfish and has in turn restricted trade. - Vietnam have been offering cancer-causing soy sauce to customers knowing that it could be unsafe for consumption. The Australia New Zealand Food Authority (ANZFA) said a King brand "New soy sauce" Imported from Vietnam was found to contain unacceptably high levels of a chloropropanol called 3-MCPD - 200 times higher than the level deemed to be safe. - A few weeks ago, the public was in an uproar following revelations that seven (7) out of 10 rice noodle factories in the capital, Hanoi, were putting formaldehyde in their products. A similar investigation in Ho Chi Minh City found six out of nine noodle manufacturers doing the same thing. International conventions ban formaldehyde in food as it is believed to accumulate in the body and cause liver, nerve and kidney damage. (Asia Times Online)
- Supermarkets across Britain have been forced to clear their shelves of suspect batches of seafood, honey, rabbit and poultry after lethal chemicals were detected in food imports from across South-east Asia, included Vietnam (The Independent, Health & Well being section).
- Decades after the wartime defoliant Agent Orange was sprayed over Vietnam, toxic chemicals continue to contaminate Vietnamese people and the food, according to a new study released Monday. The finding, published in the August issue of the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine. "Dioxin was found in ducks, chickens, a bottom-dwelling fish…(Associated Press: http://famulus. msnbc.com/ FamulusIntl) Mycotoxins (toxins produced by fungi) can readily contaminate agricultural produce during growth, processing, storage or transport. Many mycotoxins are poisonous and some are suspected carcinogens. In Vietnam, many of the higher-yielding maize and rice cultivars are harvested during the wet season, increasing the risk of fungal spread and possible mycotoxin contamination. As well as posing a direct health risk, mycotoxins can also cause indirect problems when contaminated feed is unwittingly given to livestock. In these cases, the toxins can accumulate in the flesh of the animal, being passed later to human consumers in a more concentrated form. (Professor Ivan R. Kennedy, University of Sydney, Australia) …And it's still unclear to many industry analysts what capacity and resources for testing and enforcement of safety regulations are available at Vietnam's National Fisheries Quality Assurance and Veterinary Directorate and the other local inspection agencies. Even if quality control could be made more effective and efficient, it may only underscore that most food-processing practices in Vietnam do not t international standards.
